2012 DONA Birth Doula Workshop April 20, 21 and 22 & October 12, 13 and 14th!

This 18-hour workshop is an important step towards certification as a Birth Doula with DONA-International.  The training is informative, interactive and inspiring.

The next training workshop will be held here at the Birth Tides Clinic April 20- 22, 2012 as well as on October 12-14, 2012.  You must pre-register.

A ‘Doula’ is someone who brings warmth and comfort to a birthing woman and her family.  Historically, women have attended labouring mothers during this transitional time providing intuitive and loving care.  This was often a mother, grandmother, sister or aunty…. someone experienced in childbirth who provides emotional and physical comfort but has no clinical or medical role.  Many women today are removed from their families and wish for this traditional support of an experienced woman whose only role is to ensure the comfort and emotional support that she yearns for.

Studies are showing the impact of doula care.  With more emotional support, there is a decrease in medical interventions and an increase in positive birth memories.   Doulas work with the caregivers, Midwives, doctors or OB’s – leaving the clinical care to these experienced providers, while helping to fulfil the woman’s need for continuous emotional care during labour.

At this workshop you will learn some valuable comfort measures – ways to assist the labouring mother to work with her body.  You will also learn the importance of working with the midwives or doctors who are attending the woman and the need to honour boundaries and remain within the doula’s ‘scope of practice’.  Through interactive exercises you will explore your personal beliefs and strengths.

Linda Baril has been a practicing Doula for 25 years and is a Birth Doula Trainer with DONA-International.  She is also a Childbirth Educator and has taught prenatal classes in the Comox Valley and in Tofino on the west coast of VI.  Linda invites you to join her on this journey towards providing loving support to birthing women and their families.  She has worked extensively with our wonderful Comox Valley Midwives and is excited to share her passion and excitement for childbirth in the warm and inviting atmosphere of the Birth Tides Midwifery clinic.
